When I was still a newcomer...
When I was still a newcomer to Christian Science, I suddenly collapsed one afternoon and was unable to get up. For two days I could hardly move. It was difficult for me to breathe, my whole body was painful, I ate nothing, and I became apathetic.
My husband, who knew nothing about Christian Science, thought it best to call a doctor, who diagnosed the illness as infantile paralysis. I could see a look of hopelessness in the doctor's eyes and fear in my husband's. I comforted them and said that only Christian Science could and would help me. The doctor did not give me any medicine.
I wanted to give myself a treatment, but I did not know how to go about it. So I simply reasoned thus: What is infantile paralysis? The medical profession is not sure and has no remedy for it. On the other hand, Science does know what it is and has a remedy for it. Hence it alone can help me. Christian Science defines "sickness" as nothingness, as an error of material sense. Its remedy is the truth of God and the real man. Having reasoned thus, I was filled with confidence, and all fear disappeared.
