Confidence During Testing Times at College

[Of Special Interest to Young Men and Women]

College life is generally attended by orderly learning, improved reasoning, and wholesome activities. If accompanied by spiritual-mindedness, it leads to a fuller life, greater rewards, and higher service. However, testing times come. The student should not shrink from these or resent them. They are but part of the preparatory plan to help him achieve his goal.

The Bible abounds with successfully met testing times. The stories of Moses and Nehemiah present two illustrations. Hungering in the wilderness, the children of Israel murmured against Moses. The fleshpots of Egypt seemed more inviting than freedom from bondage. "Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no" (Ex. 16:4). Thus shall we be proved and our daily intellectual supply appear as we walk in God's law.

At a later date in history, Nehemiah was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. All sorts of distracting thoughts and aggressive suggestions came to him. He replied with confidence, "I am doing a great work..., why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?" (Neh. 6:3.) With renewed spiritual strength and alertness, he successfully completed the task at hand.
