When I was a young woman,...

When I was a young woman, having been married six years and very much desiring a baby, I decided to go to an obstetrician to find out why I apparently could not have a child. After an examination, he told me that even if an operation were performed, it was very unlikely that I could have a child. Then I took the step I should have taken in the first place and went to see a Christian Science practitioner.

I had occasionally gone to a Christian Science Sunday School in earlier years and had been attending church since I had been married. The practitioner gave me treatments through prayer, also references from the Bible to study, including this one: "I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me" (Isa. 45:5). As a result a physical healing took place, and in due course my baby arrived. This child has grown to womanhood and is an active member of a Christian Science church and now has a daughter of her own.

In the Glossary of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, this definition of "heart" is given (p. 587): "Mortal feelings, motives, affections, joys, and sorrows." After my husband passed on suddenly, I gave in to "mortal feelings." I made little effort to overcome sorrow and self-pity and became subject to periodic heart attacks. These lasted for some time until I was roused to study more diligently and to learn more of God.
