While practicing for an armed...

While practicing for an armed services track meet in 1944, I accidentally ran a nail into my foot. At first I paid little attention to it, but two days later, when pain and swelling engulfed my lower right leg, I became alarmed.

It was Sunday, and after participating in the church services at the air base, I accompanied the Christian Science Wartime Minister to his home. He encouraged me to look upon the experience as an opportunity to glorify God, and he called my attention to these words of Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 66): "Trials are proofs of God's care."

He sensed that I was concerned lest I be required to report for sick call in the morning, and he reminded me that Mrs. Eddy says (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 87), "Genuine Christian Scientists are, or should be, the most systematic and law-abiding people on earth, because their religion demands implicit adherence to fixed rules, in the orderly demonstration thereof." Naturally, I desired to be obedient; but the reminder served notice to me that I was already under the jurisdiction of God's law, a law which if properly applied would heal me.
