When I first began the study...
When I first began the study of Christian Science, before I became a church member, I was convinced that there was no real pleasure in liquor and tobacco, only harm; so I stopped the use of them, and I also gave up tea and coffee, I was able to correct impatience, irritability, and resentment and to replace them with patience, courtesy, and gratitude to God. I am grateful that soon after this my prayerful work protected me from influenza when I was exposed to an epidemic of it.
A cut on my eye was healed by my denial that there is any intelligence or sensation in matter and my declaration that sight is spiritual and perfect. When I affirmed that man is not subject to matter in any way but is spiritual, a twitching of one eye ceased, and athlete's foot disappeared. When opening an outside door one winter, I hurt an ankle. This was healed by a Christian Science practitioner.
