What was fundamental to Jesus should certainly be fundamental to his followers! When He looked out upon the life about Him, He saw that it was being interpreted in terms of the physical and the immediate—even the expedient! The important things to persons seemed to be money, possessions, security, power and pleasure. Succinctly He said, "Ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith" [Am. Stand. Ver.]....

He took an opposite position from the status quo. He said that material values were not fundamental; that life must be interpreted not in terms of seen and sensed, but of unseen and spiritual. He said that the things most men hold dear are not really important. ... He saw persons as the sons of God—not as high grade animals whose senses must be satisfied. The great fundamental to Jesus was a spiritual interpretation of life! ...
