In 1923 Christian Science was...
In 1923 Christian Science was presented to me by a neighbor, but not until years later did I become an earnest student of it. I have had many proofs of God's presence and loving care through my application of Science.
I was healed of the smoking habit, which I had had for eighteen years. This healing was accomplished through my own effort and prayer. A statement by Mrs. Eddy which was constantly in my thought reads (Science and Health, p. 327), "Reform comes by understanding that there is no abiding pleasure in evil, and also by gaining an affection for good according to Science, which reveals the immortal fact that neither pleasure nor pain, appetite nor passion, can exist in or of matter, while divine Mind can and does destroy the false beliefs of pleasure, pain, or fear and all the sinful appetites of the human mind."
Several years ago, I realized on awakening one morning that I could not move the upper part of my body. I called a member of my family to my bedside to assist me to arise. He put his arm underneath my shoulders to lift me, but the pain this caused me was so severe that I asked him to let me lie still.
