Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health...

Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 66), "Trials are proofs of God's care." For many years I had pondered the meaning of this statement, and the following is an account of how its meaning unfolded to me.

A number of years ago, with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, my husband had a healing of heart trouble for which our whole family is very grateful. While the healing was taking place, it seemed necessary to me to report my husband's progress or lack of progress to my parents each day.

When the practitioner learned of this, it was gently pointed out to me that this was not in accordance with the practice of Christian Science. I was reminded of the Shunammite woman and her assertion, "It is well" (II Kings 4:26), even though to the material senses her son was dead. It was further pointed out to me that, as Mrs. Eddy tells us, "God is our Father and our Mother, our Minister and the great Physician: He is man's only real relative on earth and in heaven" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 151). Obediently I stopped reporting my husband's condition, and soon after that his healing was complete.
