Signs of the Times

Winifred M. Merritt in The Anglican Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

In some of the old churches of Europe there are paintings and stained glass windows in which God is an old gentleman with a beard....It still comes as a kind of shock to come face to face with this presentation of God.

Perhaps we tend to mislead ourselves and each other by saving that God is a "Person" or "Three Persons". A more suitable word would be "personality"....We can imagine God as having Personality of a higher order than anything in our earthly experience, without reducing Him to a human level....When we say that God is personal, we mean, among other things, that He is alive. He must be alive, because we are alive. We know we are.
