"The basis of immortality"

The prophets were instruments of Deity, God's spokesmen. They were possessed of spiritual discernment, which enabled them to perceive the facts of Spirit. Foretelling the future was only part of their prophesying. Their work was to share with men what was revealed to them of God. Prophecy was a divine gift; its purpose was to discern spiritual facts and to prove their reality.

Elijah is one of the better known prophets of the Old Testament, In fact, in the Glossary of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy refers to this spiritual seer as a symbol of prophecy. Using the Greek form of his name, she defines "Elias" as, "Prophecy; spiritual evidence opposed to material sense; Christian Science, with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold; the basis of immortality" (p. 585).

To one who has thought of immortality only as that which will concern him after he dies, the Science of Christ comes with an enlightening and comforting message. It explains that we experience immortality as we discern "the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold."
