"To those leaning on the sustaining...

To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, Pref., p vii). The real meaning of this statement came to me very clearly when I had a healing not long ago. If one has complete reliance on "the sustaining infinite," blessings flow forth.

For quite some time I had been suffering from deafness in one ear. Remembering the wonderful healings in Christian Science which I had had in the past, I became very much annoyed with myself that I should have an inharmonious condition for such a long period of time. Right then I decided that I was going to do something about it. As Paul said, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (II Cor. 6:2). I put all material tasks aside—they could wait; the important thing to do now was to work out my own salvation.

The Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly for the week was on "Soul." The third citation from the Bible was, "The eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken" (Isa. 32:3). The third citation from Science and Health was (p. 213): "Sound is a mental impression made on mortal belief. The ear does not really hear. Divine Science reveals sound as communicated through the senses of Soul—through spiritual understanding." I then looked at the definition of "ears" in the Glossary of Science and Health. The first part of it reads (p. 585), "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding." I realized that we cannot hear, or gain spiritual understanding, through physical organs or a bone structure. The only way we hear truly is through Spirit, God, Soul, "for in him we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28). I asked God in prayer to show me how to accept His ever-present perfection.
