Challenge to Writers

Mankind needs to understand Christian Science today. Nothing else offers real hope for the solution of the world's problems. The Christian Science Journal, the Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science, in several languages, are being placed in reach of men, women, and children everywhere. If what is written for the pages of these periodicals succeeds, its readers will begin to understand and demonstrate Science. Their transformed lives will show what Truth is, the periodicals will be in ever-increasing demand, and mankind's need will be progressively met.

Two things determine success in all writing. The writer must perceive an idea, and he must convey this to the reader. A lesson may be learned from the famous artist-photographer who spent an entire summer photographing a white cup and saucer in order to understand better how to convey to the viewer the picture his artistic sense beheld.

The writer who is inspired by divine Love will show similar concern for his means of communication. He will eagerly study his work from the reader's point of view. A thought buried in verbiage may have meaning to the writer, but it is dead to the reader. It must be exhumed. An unnecessary word obstructs the view and must be removed. Only when the writer's idea is perfectly clear to the reader does the writing succeed.
