Ellen Learns to Pray

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Ellen is a little girl who lives in the western part of the United States. Although she knows and loves Christian Science, Ellen seldom attends Sunday School because she lives many, many miles from a Christian Science church. Instead, her mother teaches Ellen and her brothers at home. They learn the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, the Sermon on the Mount, and many verses from the Bible, and also statements from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

One summer Ellen and her brothers had two horses, one a gentle brown mare, named Alta, and the other a very lively white and brown pinto, named Paint. How Ellen and her brothers enjoyed riding over the countryside!

When winter came, their father told the children that it would be necessary to sell the horses because there just wasn't enough pasture grass for them to eat all winter. Ellen blinked back her tears and didn't say anything. After she went to bed, she cried softly into her pillow. Her mother, hearing her crying, came into the room and sat on the edge of the bed.
