I began to study Christian Science...

I began to study Christian Science at a time when I was experiencing extreme mental turmoil near the end of World War I. A big poster in the window of a small downtown Christian Science Reading Room attracted my attention. It read (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I wanted very much to be free, and so I walked into this room. A kind librarian gave me a Service Edition of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and directed me to a Christian Science practitioner. Thus began my study of this religion.

As I looked into my past thinking, I realized that I had not always been truthful in my relationship with people and circumstances. I started by just telling the truth always. I had a great reverence for the truth and was unswervingly obedient. As a beginning student, however, I soon saw that just to tell the truth is not enough. To know Truth is to know God and to be obedient in higher ways, to think spiritually. If one of the old thoughts presented itself, one not honest or true or clean, I simply said to myself, "That isn't true," and went right on thinking correctly.

Thus I studied and worked, read seven pages of Science and Health daily, and tried earnestly to be obedient. The Bible promise was being fulfilled. I was knowing the truth and was made free, happier than I had ever been before in my life, a better workman, a better citizen, a better man.
