Primitive Christianity Reinstated
"Mrs. Eddy ... was obedient to the demands of God, the source of her revelation"
If the world's newspapers carried the title of this article on their front pages tomorrow morning, the thinking of a great part of humanity would be considerably startled and perhaps even elated. Yet in the year 1879 such an announcement was made by a group of dedicated, inspired Christians when they organized the first Christian Science church. In response to a motion made by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, they voted "to organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Historical Sketch from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, p. 17).
