For over forty years Christian Science...
For over forty years Christian Science has been my help in overcoming many difficulties regarding health and also supply.
In 1917 the fear of losing my mind was so depressing I had to resign from a teaching position. Months later I heard of Christian Science and was told that it would help my mother, a semi-invalid. She was unwilling to have anything to do with it, but it did hold out hope for me. I traveled to a city some eighty miles distant, still afraid and uncertain, but hopeful. The practitioner I had gone to see was very kind. Her words were comforting: "You can't lose your mind. God is the only Mind, and you can't lose God." Although I had been a devout Bible student since I was a small child, this seemed almost too good to be true!
The practitioner went with me to a Christian Science Reading Room, and I secured the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the current issue of the Quarterly. The second Wednesday after I began studying I gave a testimony at the Wednesday meeting in a branch church, expressing my deep gratitude for the light shining on my way, for the happiness I felt in finding a religion with which I could help myself and others.
I spoke to the practitioner of a desire to find a place to work in a home where I could see the practical application of Christian Science. In a few days a college friend, a Scientist, invited me to help in her home. It was a precious experience. She knew how to apply the teachings of Science and was very generous in sharing this knowledge with me. In about three weeks I had gained sufficient understanding to return to my home, intent on learning more of this blessed truth.
It was about four years before I lost all fear of the mental confusion which I felt I had inherited. A promise in the Bible was helpful. It was pointed out to me on my first visit to the practitioner and reads (Ezek. 18:2,3): "What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel."
For membership in The Mother Church and the privilege of serving in branch churches, I am very grateful. Class instruction and association meetings have added greatly to the joy of being a Scientist, and the blessings derived from Christian Science lectures have been many.—(Mrs.) Mildred A. Schmidt, Shelton, Washington.
