When I was encouraged to...

When I was encouraged to start reading the Bible Lessons, which are set forth in the Christian Science Quarterly for students of Science to study, the subject of the lesson I first read was "Love," and it gave me a clearer understanding of God and of man. Later I realized that I must attend every Christian Science church service and Wednesday testimony meeting in order to gain more of the truth. This practice became a joy to me, and it was through my study and regular attendance every Sunday and every Wednesday evening that I gained the true idea of God. I also learned that divine Love is ever present to guide, protect, and heal. I am grateful that Christian Science has taught me that man reflects divine Love.

One Sunday evening, after I had been studying Christian Science for about four years, I sustained a broken rib. I felt no pain from the rib at first, but was very uncomfortable. I tried to pray as I was learning to do in Christian Science and to bring about a healing; but each day the rib became worse.

When the next Sunday came round, the pain was so bad that I did not feel like going to church and mixing with others. Then it was revealed to me that my presence, just as much as anyone else's, was required there. So I decided I would go, although I might appear to be somewhat sad. But divine Love had a better way than sadness, and I found myself smiling at and being cheerful with others. As usual I attended two Sunday services; but at the end of the day the rib was as painful as ever.
