I am very grateful for a healing...

I am very grateful for a healing which took place at the time of our daughter's birth. A Christian Science practitioner and I had been working prayerfully together for several months previously, and I had done much studying of Mrs. Eddy's writings.

I had engaged an obstetrician to attend me at the baby's birth, and during my pregnancy he found everything fine. Upon my last visit to his office, however, he was very worried about something revealed by X-ray photographs which had been taken. He said that there was a strong possibility that he would not be able to save the baby.

I went directly from the doctor's office to the practitioner's home. We reaffirmed that man is spiritual, perfect, upright, and we read these words of Mrs. Eddy from Science and Health (p. 200): "The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike. We knew that error could not reverse Truth or cancel the effectiveness of the metaphysical work which we had already done. As a result of my continued study at home that week my consciousness became filled with the truth that God, Life, fills all space, is All-in-all. Much fear was overcome.

When the baby was born the following week there were no complications. Instead of a difficult period of thirty-six hours which the doctor predicted for me, there were only two hours of labor. The doctor was amazed and gave much credit to Christian Science.

Some of the other healings which our family has had include those of a streptococcic throat, jaundice, and influenza.

Early one afternoon I turned my right ankle when I stepped too close to the edge of a sidewalk. Although the pain was intense, it vanished as I declared aloud some of the truths of God and man which we learn in Christian Science. I returned home, continued with my housework, and later drove the car downtown.

By late afternoon, however, the pain had returned, and the foot began to swell. I took the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings and read aloud from them. When my husband arrived home the pain was still strong. However, I continued declaring that the real man of God's creating is spiritual and perfect, and the pain greatly-lessened. I denied the suggestion that I would probably sleep very little that night, and I had the most restful sleep I had had in weeks.

The next morning the swelling had gone. The foot was a little sensitive to stand upon, but by evening the ankle was normal. I prepared dinner and practiced the piano, using that foot in pedaling with complete freedom.

I am grateful for the privilege of serving in various branch churches, societies, and a Christian Science college organization. Especially inspiring was the experience of helping to organize and work in a society in a small town where we formerly lived. The loving support of The Mother Church was greatly appreciated, and my husband and I learned much about church organization and membership.—(Mrs.) Vivian M. Olney, Salem, Oregon.
