Shortly after attending my first...
Shortly after attending my first service in a Church of Christ, Scientist, I had the opportunity of seeing Science effectively applied. Our two daughters had contracted a skin disease. My wife and I asked for treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. The following day we found that the rash had disappeared altogether from the bodies of both girls. And more than this, warts which had covered the hands of our elder daughter vanished at the same time and have never returned.
I carried a Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy with me throughout five years of active service in World War I and studied them at every opportunity. At one time I was in command of a company of officers, men, and horses during a time of heavy fighting in open warfare. One moonlight night our entire company lay exposed to the enemy. I felt a deep responsibility for those in my charge and turned to God in prayer for guidance.
In the early morning a shell landed near our camp. Under what I felt to be divine Mind's direction I shouted, "Break camp!" the one command which, from a military viewpoint, should not have been given, but it was the only one that could possibly have saved our company. Every man jumped at the command; the convoy moved out, and on our heels twenty-five shells were put at three-minute intervals into the line we had vacated. We did not lose a man or a horse. To human sense, this was miraculous. Clearly we had moved under orders impelled by God.
