About the year 1933 I was in a desperate state. I had a serious stomach and intestinal disorder which several operations had failed to alleviate. The doctors gave me no hope of recovery; so I was put on a strict diet, the slightest deviation from which caused me severe pain. In addition, I was depressed mentally. Some dear relatives were living in what seemed to be almost unresolvable conflict with one another and came to me for counsel, but I was unable to help them.
Then a cousin visited me. He had so changed for the better since I last saw him that I asked him outright what had brought about the transformation. He said, "Christian Science." A light dawned upon me! Twice I had been offered and had rejected this Science, but now I realized that its teachings alone could help me. I asked for the name of a Christian Science practitioner and visited him the very next day. I began to study Science at once.
"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). These words of Jesus stayed with me. I wanted to be free from mental strain and material health rules, for I saw they involved a lack of freedom. I destroyed all my medicines and discontinued the restrictive diet. Within a few days I was happy and well. I was grateful that I could then help my relatives with their troubles. I have never again suffered from stomach trouble, and I can eat anything.
