Activities for the Armed Services

Military Chapels

Several years ago the writer visited an Air Force base in the Middle West with a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services. While we were standing in the foyer of the chapel talking with a Protestant Chaplain, two airmen entered. They explained to the Chaplain that they had just arrived at the base and wanted to find the Christian Science Minister so that they might learn when and where he held services. The Chaplain graciously introduced the airmen to the Minister and withdrew while the Minister explained to them about the Christian Science activities being carried on at the base.

These airmen were following the instructions given in the pamphlet "Information for Christian Scientists Serving in the Armed Forces." On page 5, under the heading "Information about Christian Science Activities" is this statement: "If this information does not appear on your unit bulletin boards, visit the nearest military chapel."

This statement is included in the pamphlet of Armed Services Activities because Chaplains are charged by the Armed Forces with meeting the religious needs of all military personnel. Since Chaplains of other denominations are not prepared by training or conviction to conduct Christian Science services or to give Christian Science treatments, the Chaplains assist Christian Scientists to get in touch with duly appointed Christian Science Chaplains, Ministers, or Representatives.
