Turning Water into Wine

Why did Jesus turn water into wine at the marriage feast in Cana of Galilee? An answer to this question, of course, involves interpretation, and perhaps this is why John alone includes a record of this event in his Gospel (see John 2:1-11).

John interpreted the Scriptures spiritually to a greater extent than did other writers, and it is evident that he expected to have his Gospel interpreted in this manner. What were called miracles had the distinction of being signs, because they indicated something beyond themselves. Perhaps this event was included because, when interpreted from a spiritual standpoint, it forms a suitable introduction to the Master's lifework.

Jesus' presence at this marriage feast, as well as his part in the festivities, may have been more important than appears on the surface. Could it be possible that his turning water into wine called attention to and dramatized the transforming nature of his ministry, a ministry that was to elevate the human concept of existence to a higher—a spiritual—basis?
