I learned of Christian Science in 1947 while serving with the military forces in Algeria. At that time a Christian Scientist gave me a copy of The Herald of Christian Science (French Edition). What I read interested me exceedingly, particularly the testimonies of healing, which revealed that flame of spiritual love which increases from day to day and will finally enfold us all.

When I returned home I purchased a copy of Science and Health and began to study it, applying what I understood of it in my own affairs. Since that time I have used no remedy other than the power of God when in need of healing.

One evening I was returning home from work and was leading my horse by the bridle. Suddenly a horse in front of me began to back and to kick furiously. His two hoofs struck me in the stomach and groin, knocking me unconscious for about ten minutes. When I came to, the people around me wanted to give me something alcoholic to drink, which I refused.
