Christian Science was introduced...

Christian Science was introduced to me whilst I was serving in the Armed Forces in New Guinea. I had always been a very heavy smoker and social drinker, and at the time I was suffering from nervous dyspepsia, a complaint I had had for many years.

It was customary for me to visit our regimental aid post for medicine to ease the pain it caused. Through my regular visits to the aid post I became friendly with a corporal who worked in this section, and during our talks I told him of my troubles and of my desire to end everything by taking my own life. He then told me of Christian Science, saying, "Before you do anything desperate, why not come with me to a Christian Science service?"

So we went the following Sunday evening to the service conducted in the post chapel under the auspices of what was then called the Christian Science Wartime Activities. I thought it was the most wonderful service I had ever heard, even though the chapel was just a little hut in the middle of the bush on the top of a steep hill. It had to be reached by climbing one hundred and forty steps cut into the hillside. I felt that now I really belonged somewhere.
