Silence in the modern world is often hard to come by, but if we want it enough we can get it. ... The Bible urges it upon us over and over again. "Study to be quiet." "Commune with your own heart ..., and be still." "Stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord." "Be still, and know that I am God." Elijah found that the Lord was not in the whirlwind, nor in the earthquake, nor in the fire, but in the still small voice. Isaiah learned that "in quietness and in confidence" lay the sources of his strength....

Out of the silences have come the great thinkers, the great prophets, the great leaders....
