Before I knew of Christian Science...

Before I knew of Christian Science, I had a tendency to take cold frequently, but this was eliminated by the understanding that matter does not and cannot take cold. On page 377 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes, "If your patient believes in taking cold, mentally convince him that matter cannot take cold, and that thought governs this liability." I am indeed grateful for this statement of truth, which freed me from colds many years ago.

The Psalmist sang, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty" (Ps. 91:1). The understanding that God is Love, ever present, and the only power enabled me to overcome the fear of staying alone at night. I knew that fear has no creator; that fear is ignorance of God, Love. As my understanding of God grew, fear disappeared.

After I had been in Science a few years, I was able to stay alone in my cottage at the lakeside. I was alone there one evening when the tail end of a cyclone hit that part of the lake. This indeed seemed to put my trust in God to its greatest test. Some of the cottages were moved from their foundations. My own cottage was almost rocking as I sat on the side of the bed and sang a hymn. The hymn quieted my fears to a great extent, and I felt that God was right there with me and would take care of me.
