Seeing Through Disguises
"Who wants to trifle with disguises when he knows man spiritually, free from the claims of mortality?"
Over fifty years ago, Mrs. Eddy, then a resident of Concord. New Hampshire, was invited by the city to be its honored guest at the annual State Fair. She accepted the invitation, and we are told that when she arrived she "asked to witness the exhibition of high diving, and so her carriage drove through to the side of the pool of water where the diver, dressed as Mephistopheles, in red and with tail, was to dive down from a height through a hoop of fire into a small pool of water." She was interested in the exhibition as an instance of overcoming fear. After she had seen it she remarked to the friends with her, "'I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven'" (We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, First Series, pp.19, 20).
