I shall never cease to be grateful for having been reared in Christian Science. My mother had been introduced to this religion when in tearful desperation she met a Christian Science practitioner near the hospital where my brother had been given but a few hours to live; he had been suffering from spinal meningitis.
The practitioner invited my mother into his office, and there he spoke to her of Christ Jesus' raising of Lazarus from the dead and of the life and love that God has bestowed upon all His children. When she returned to the hospital some time later, my brother was sitting up in bed, completely healed.
In my early teens, partly because of a broken home, I drifted somewhat from the teachings of Christian Science. However, during this time I had many proofs of God's protection, which bore out these words from Hymn No. 115) in the Christian Science Hymnal:
