For over thirty years I smoked...

For over thirty years I smoked from two to three packages of cigarettes a day; I endeavored many times to give up the habit, but always without success. Then several years ago I wanted to join a Church of Christ, Scientist, but knew the smoking habit must be healed before my application would be accepted. I attended church regularly and read daily the Bible Lesson to be found in the Quarterly, but the desire to smoke was not lost.

I visited another city, in which I stayed with a relative whose apartment I had to myself during the day. I read Science and Health from cover to cover and studied diligently to overcome the habit, again with no success. Twice during this visit I stopped smoking for about two days; but the desire for tobacco did not leave me, and I went back to it with great satisfaction. I returned home thoroughly discouraged and disgusted. The habit had taken such a hold on me that I could not study the Bible Lesson without a cigarette in my hand.

Then as I was reading the textbook one day, I came across this passage on page 206: "The power of the human will should be exercised only in subordination to Truth." During my weeks of study with the help of the Concordances I had read everything Mrs. Eddy had to say on will power, but only on that day did the fact dawn upon me that human will power must be subordinated to Truth.
