AS A MAN "THINKETH IN HIS HEART"

The wise writer of the book of Proverbs once said of a man (23:7), "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Emphasizing the underlying truth of this proverb, namely the oneness of thought and experience, Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 199), "The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible."

By and large, mankind is not familiar with the relationship which exists between the thinking of an individual and his entire human experience. As a consequence, men are hopelessly seeking for the solution of their problems in material rather than in mental causation. They do not clearly perceive that the devotion of righteous thinking to the achievement of health, happiness, success, and peace will perforce bring these into their experience.

The question, then, of paramount importance to everyone is, What is righteous thinking? Christian Science points out that Christ Jesus defined such mental activity as the kingdom of God within us. He understood that God's kingdom is a state of heavenly thinking and living and that it lies within the grasp of all to cultivate and enjoy.
