At one time in my experience I...
At one time in my experience I became rather lax in my study and application of Christian Science and consequently found myself in the same predicament as that of the foolish virgins, who are described in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew as having neglected to keep their lamps filled with oil and burning.
Since my illness was never diagnosed by a physician, I do not know what the medical name would be; but I had difficulty in breathing, which was accompanied by severe pain, as well as considerable stiffness that caused difficulty in walking. I called a Christian Science practitioner who worked for me for about two weeks. Since I was living alone, I had to take care of my own physical needs; I was able to do this with the help of a few friends who lovingly brought me food during their lunch hour. The practitioner also helped in this way, as well as doing the prayerful work.
The practitioner knew that I often received help from the hymns. One day she asked me to read and study "Christ My Refuge" by Mrs. Eddy. As I studied the words of this hymn, it seemed to mean much more to me than it had ever meant before. The first two verses stood out particularly. They read (Poems, p. 12):
"O'er waiting harpstrings of the mind
There sweeps a strain,
Low, sad, and sweet, whose measures bind
The power of pain,
"And wake a white-winged angel throng
Of thoughts, illumed
By faith, and breathed in raptured song,
With love perfumed."
The illumination I received helped "bind the power of pain," and "a white-winged angel throng of thoughts, illumed by faith" established themselves as my thinking, thereby manifesting themselves in a better sense of body. I improved rapidly from then on and was soon able to walk again without difficulty and to return to work healed.
Through reliance on Christian Science, I have had many other healings for which I am truly grateful to God.—(Mrs.) Hilda J. Carrasco, Fresno, California.
