REAL ATTRACTION

The Bible records many instances when the multitudes thronged Christ Jesus as he went from place to place. It is recorded that, at one time, he "went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore" (Matt. 13:2). On another occasion Peter said (Luke 8:45), "Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?"

Idle curiosity is not a satisfactory explanation for this attraction to Jesus. That which attracted the multitudes to the Master, wherever he went, was the spiritual quality of his thinking.

The spirituality of Jesus caused unusual happenings to take place. Water was turned into wine, a few loaves of bread were multiplied to feed thousands, the lame were made to walk and the blind to see, and on three occasions those who had seemingly passed through the portals of death were restored to their families. Such demonstrations of God's power aroused the humble seekers for Truth, God.

The basis of Jesus' thinking was Spirit, not matter; he recognized man, created in the image and likeness of God, to be spiritual, not material; he saw abundance, not lack, as reality; he accepted good, not evil, as infinite; he knew that life eternal must destroy materiality and death. Small wonder that multitudes groping for good were attracted by the spiritual truths he taught and lived.

We are sometimes annoyed, disturbed, and frightened by the suggestions which throng us for acceptance. But we must remember that such false beliefs are no different as to type from those which Jesus encountered. The Master did not disregard false suggestion. He met and mastered it with his understanding of God. We must also remember that Jesus spurned personal credit for his works, for he recognized only his divine sonship with the Father. He said (John 5:20), "The Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel."

Today unnumbered thousands throng the way to learn of a better life, more joyous, free from limiting beliefs. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 371): "The adult, in bondage to his beliefs, no more comprehends his real being than does the child; and the adult must be taken out of his darkness, before he can get rid of the illusive sufferings which throng the gloaming. The way in divine Science is the only way out of this condition."

Christian Science is divine Science. It is teaching mankind that spiritual attraction is inherent in every individual. It is a natural impulse which becomes imperative in each one of us to seek and reach the real meaning of his being.

Christian Science is unfolding to mankind the nature of God as Spirit, and the indissoluble and indestructible relationship of man to God. This Science reveals man's identity as spiritual idea, established in Mind, God; in Spirit, not in matter; in Soul, not in material body. This spiritual reality of man's being is an imperative attraction impelling us to seek and know God.

Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 536), "If man's spiritual gravitation and attraction to one Father, in whom we 'live, and move, and have our being,' should be lost, and if man should be governed by corporeality instead of divine Principle, by body instead of by Soul, man would be annihilated." Real attraction is the divine force bringing recognition of God as Principle, as the only creator, governing the universe, inclusive of man, in harmony. Such attraction is God's unfoldment of His own right ideas bringing healing and peace to mankind.

There are many evidences today of spiritual attraction. Whenever one attends a service in a Church of Christ, Scientist, he is being drawn Spiritward. Whenever one is led to read an article from one of the Christian Science periodicals, he is being attracted by spiritual ideas. Whenever one makes use of a Christian Science Reading Room, where may be found all authorized Christian Science literature, he is responding to real attraction.

Real attraction causes us to seek spiritual means for help in times of trouble. At one time I had become dissatisfied with the branch church which I had been attending. I had allowed myself to be influenced by certain traits which material personalities expressed rather than by divine Principle.

This false estimate of church and my critical attitude toward my fellow workers may have been the reason for my also having a physical difficulty. I was tempted to resort to medical means, but instead I sought prayerful help from a Christian Science practitioner. I chose to rely exclusively on spiritual means. And I received my healing when I returned to my church, resolved to unsee the errors I had believed and to work for a clearer understanding of Church as "the structure of Truth and Love" (Science and Health, p. 583).

In the years following, I have found that in responding to the attraction of Spirit, or real attraction, I have experienced happiness and an opportunity to serve mankind.
