What Literature Shall Be Used in Classes

The Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy is specific in defining the lessons that shall be taught in the Christian Science Sunday School. Officers and teachers will therefore find it helpful to reread, from time to time, Article XX of the Manual, bearing the caption "Sunday School."

In the light of this article only two books are taken into the classes, namely the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, and the Christian Science Quarterly. The Christian Science Hymnal is required to complete the order of exercises for the Sunday School, and although it may be referred to occasionally in order to illustrate the lessons, it is not otherwise used in the classes.

The question is sometimes asked, "How are the pupils to become familiar with the Manual and Mrs. Eddy's other writings if they cannot be brought into the classes?" In presenting the lessons, teachers often find opportunity to quote from these works. For example, one teacher tells us that while the class was studying the Lesson-Sermon one Sunday, the subject of erroneous influence was discussed, and she took advantage of the opportunity to refer to "A Rule for Motives and Acts" (Manual, Art. VIII, Sect. 1).
