In my late teens I became dissatisfied...

In my late teens I became dissatisfied with the prevalent theological teaching which claims that God sends both good and evil into the experience of His children, and I began a search for God as Love, which Jesus' disciple John declared God to be.

I had heard of Christian Science; so I obtained a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, but I did not understand what I read. When I was suddenly hospitalized for a severe mastoid condition, a friend recommended Christian Science treatment. As I dreaded an operation of the kind I faced, I gladly consented and had treatment from a practitioner, but with little or no idea of what such treatment consisted. In a few days the physician came to prepare me for the operation, but could find no trace of the condition which had appeared so alarming. I was as mystified and amazed as he, but I was dismissed from the hospital after a thorough examination.

Shortly thereafter when recurring melancholia became increasingly depressing, I called on a practitioner. She talked with me a few minutes about my concept of God and then said, "Could you accept the definition of John that God is Love?" I told her this appealed to me very much, and at that point I began an earnest study of the Bible and the textbook. After several months, during which I had the practitioner's frequent help, the melancholia lifted like a fog, never to return, and I found my feet in the path leading from sense to Soul.
