OUR FATHER'S BUSINESS

At the early age of twelve years Jesus had already perceived and accepted his God-appointed mission: to bring to sinful, suffering humanity the knowledge of the Christ. His reply to his mother's question as to why he had caused her anxiety by tarrying in the temple at Jerusalem while the rest of the company were homeward bound was (Luke 2:49), "How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"

Never did the Master give up or swerve from the God-directed path. He brought his knowledge of God into every detail of his lifework and demonstrated the healing power of this knowledge. To be about our Father's business means to demonstrate the truths of God and man taught us in Christian Science. The carrying on of God's work signifies that we are not merely believers in, but also demonstrators of, the healing power of Truth.

Our Master explained what it means to be about our Father's business when he said to his disciples (Mark 16:15–18): "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ... And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
