LOVE IS OUR PROTECTION

As one prayerfully contemplates the truth that divine Love and God are one, he begins to understand why the Apostle John, in the simplicity of great reverence, could say (I John 4:8), "God is love," and why our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, was impelled to speak of Love in such glowing terms. She says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 104), "The Principle of Christian Science is Love, and its idea represents Love." On the same page she adds: "I will love, if another hates. I will gain a balance on the side of good, my true being. This alone gives me the forces of God wherewith to overcome all error." Proportionately as mankind recognize God as Love and man as Love's image and likeness, they find nobility in themselves and protection from evil.

Divine Love is the name for God which presents Him to humanity as the protective, all-wise Father and Mother of all, who has conferred upon man safety, spirituality, beauty, goodness, and eternality. The recognition that God is Love and that His creation, man and the universe, is made to express immutability, purity, and perfection is indeed protective.

One who acknowledges God's allness and His ever-present love is protected from the bad effects of the false belief that God has made a material creation constituted of beings who have ungodlike qualities and who constantly assail each other and produce chaos. The knowledge of God's creation as spiritual awakens one to the fact that he must no longer base his premises and conclusions on the belief that man is mortal or that any individual can harm others either through the exercise of physical force or through a mental, despotic, mesmeric power.
