THE CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST AS REFORMER

The world has known many reformers, but the greatest of them all is Christ Jesus. Why? Because he understood God aright as Spirit and recognized creation as wholly spiritual; he understood God's laws and applied them in daily living. Mary Baker Eddy, another great Christian reformer, founded her Church and fulfilled her mission primarily on the basis of Jesus' words and works.

In an article entitled "Put up Thy Sword" she shows the way to all true reform in the following statement (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 215): "Christian Science demands order and truth. To abide by these we must first understand the Principle and object of our work, and be clear that it is Love, peace, and good will toward men. Then we shall demonstrate the Principle in the way of His appointment, and not according to the infantile conception of our way."

Jesus demonstrated this method of reform when he rebuked one of his disciples for cutting off the ear of the servant of the high priest. He told Peter to put up his sword and then healed the ear of the injured man. The disciple struck out impetuously and blindly with the world's weapons; Jesus waged his battle of reform with truth and order. He understood God to be Principle, divine Love, and knew that the only way to true reform is through the healing ministry and guidance of Love in daily living.
