In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is a chapter of testimonies, under the title "Fruitage," by those who have been healed of various diseases and failings by the perusal of this wonderful book. My experience of healing is similiar to the one told on page 644, beginning with line 7 and thence to the end of the testimony. In November, 1929, soon after the stock market crash I was sitting in a restaurant eating breakfast. Everything was lost, or so I thought. My home, my business, in fact, almost everything I had was gone.

I had turned to alcohol as the only source of comfort for my troubles, and it had such a hold on me that sporadic attempts to break its shackles had failed. On this morning a friend came to the restaurant where I was eating and asked me if I liked to read. I said that I did, and he gave me two books wrapped in a newspaper. Upon going to my quarters, I found that the books were a Bible and a copy of Science and Health. I looked rather disdainfully at them and said to myself, "There is nothing in these books to help my situation" However, having nothing else to do at the moment, I started to read Science and Health.

I had at the time quite a large stock of alcoholic beverages. My addiction to liquor was so great that I kept a bottle under my pillow.
