"ROCK AND FEATHERS"

Mankind's search for security and protection is usually in the wrong direction. The search often takes little account of the fact that these desirable conditions are qualities which progressively unfold within an individual's consciousness to the degree that he understands his true identity as God's reflection. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 263): "These two words in Scripture suggest the sweetest similes to be found in any language—rock and feathers: 'Upon this rock I will build my church;' 'He shall cover thee with His feathers.' How blessed it is to think of you as 'beneath the shadow of a great rock in a weary land,' safe in His strength, building on His foundation, and covered from the devourer by divine protection and affection."

Rock is frequently used in the Bible to represent Christ. Paul was cognizant of the fact that the Christ is ever present and was existent long before Jesus came to manifest the Christ, Truth, in his healing and redemptive work for mankind. Speaking to the Corinthians of how the children of Israel passed through the Red Sea, Paul said (I Cor. 10:4), "They drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."

Now, as then, this Rock, Christ, gives drink to those thirsting for the living waters of Truth; and The Mother Church is pouring forth these healing waters to mankind, cleansing and revivifying in a degree every aspect of the world thought. In the weary land of materialistic thinking, the great Rock, Truth, stands immovable, ready to shade the weary pilgrims from the fierce heat of would-be destructive blasts, sheltering those who believe that they have strayed from their Father's house and are making their way thither again.
