"COME UNTO ME"

The writer recalls a custom which prevailed during her childhood days in the country in which she was reared. There men carried their burdens with the help of a yoke. Great care was taken to have the yoke fit well over the shoulders so that it would not cause pressure or strain and would leave the arms and hands free. In this way, one was able to carry heavy burdens with ease.

As men use the physical yoke to ease their burdens, so we, with the help of Christian Science, can use the spiritual yoke referred to by Jesus to help us to lighten our mental burdens. Jesus must have been familiar with the custom of the physical yoke or he could not have used it as an illustration to make his teaching plain to the people.

In Matthew we read these tender words of Jesus (11:28-30): "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
