Extending the Influence of Our Churches

[Note: Extracts from a report prepared for the Reading Room Division by the executive board of a branch church]

Dearborn, Michigan

For over twenty years our Christian Science Reading Room was in a ground-floor location on a main street, with much pedestrian traffic. The landlord preferred not to lease the building. The rent was nominal, and our appreciation of this fact kept us from asking for a lease.

As our church progressed, the membership increased, and a new edifice was obtained. Although we were working toward dedication, many of the members wished to modernize the Reading Room. Three times a plan for modernization was proposed, and each time it was rejected. Always there seemed to be a lack of funds. To broach the subject of a lease to the landlord might, we felt, result in increased rent.
