SURMOUNTING THE BROW OF THE HILL

What do we mean by the brow of the hill? One definition of "brow" given in a dictionary is "the edge or projecting upper part of a steep place." To the writer, the brow of the hill in its spiritual significance has been taken to mean that place or position reached just before the summit of a demonstration of the truth in Christian Science. A brow is not always easy to attain. But we must press on still farther and gain greater glimpses of the infinite God, and hence of the true spiritual man.

We sometimes express gratitude for the little understanding or intelligence we express. But do we not need to remember that we have really been given infinite intelligence and knowledge as God's perfect offspring? With gratitude for the little which we have attained of Truth must we not press on to possess good in infinite measure?

In our striving to gain the brow of the hill of divine Science the efforts needed may seem wearisome and prolonged; we may find some definite trait of character needing correction, a fault hitherto hidden but now brought to view. As we accept the challenge to correct each error and then press forward, the loving light of Truth will illumine our pathway. We may perhaps need more patience in our efforts, perhaps a greater sense of true, impartial love, deeply felt toward all. Mary Baker Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 266), "Universal Love is the divine way in Christian Science."
