As Task Force 43 prepared to get under way for the most hazardous journey yet to the Antarctic ice cap, Admiral Richard E. Byrd . . . wrote Secretary Ivan L. Bennett of the Washington, D.C., office of the American Bible Society:

"Any expedition, by definition, takes men off the beaten paths of civilization. Operatin Deepfreeze, because of its scope and duration, will subject more men to the hazards of Antarctica, and to the particular hazards of pioneering in uncharted areas, than any previous expedition in history. To be successful and to come through safely we shall all need the guidance and help of Providence.
