THE SHADOWS FLEE

An article in the Christian Science Sentinel recently made the arresting point that darkness never pierces light, but that light always extinguishes darkness. Thus we see that the initiative always belongs to the light. Darkness can only await its own extinction. Darkness can neither put out the light nor postpone its power to enlighten.

So it is with spiritual light, the liberating light of Christian Science. Nothing can nullify the radiant effulgence of the Christ, Truth, nor arrest its healing enlightenment. When dawns that marvelous light, the spiritual realization that Life is God, divine good, and that "Life demonstrates Life," as stated in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 306), the darkened sense of a precarious material life, separate from God, which we have somehow to keep going, begins to abate at once. God's loving care for His own dawns in a new light, with restful assurance.

If the light we now have seems little and the dark vast, let us remember what takes place when we are driving a car at night. We switch on the headlights, and their beam pierces our path ahead. There is light by which to move forward. Further light may be needed beyond what the present light reveals, but as we move forward, our light does too, and at each point in the road ahead the light is there to lead us aright.
