"WHAT THE UNDERSTANDING OF GOD BRINGS TO MAN"

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 295), "God creates and governs the universe, including man." In this same textbook, Mrs. Eddy defines God as Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle. Life, Truth, and Love. When we employ these synonyms for God in our study and application of Christian Science, we are helped in gaining a clearer understanding of God, of His universe, of man made in His image and likeness; and we see what this spiritual understanding brings to mankind.

To see that God, who "creates and governs the universe, including man," is Mind is to see creation in the mental realm where it belongs. What is creative Mind? It is intelligence, all wisdom. Thus, the universe and man are intelligently and wisely created. Man possesses this intelligence not because of any power of his own, but by virtue of being the creation of Mind. Man is therefore an expression, or reflection, of intelligence; or simply stated, man is intelligent.
