I shall be ever grateful to God,...

I shall be ever grateful to God, the Giver of all good, who has enabled me through Christian Science to lay hold on eternal Life.

Easter time in 1917 found me in a deplorable condition physically and mentally. I was suffering from chronic bowel trouble, chronic dyspepsia, chronic catarrh of the throat, as well as lumbago. My mental state was such that I was unable to give much thought to anything; in fact, I had no real desire to live. I had been increasingly taking to drink, but had on several occasions tried unsuccessfully to overcome this habit. The night before Easter Sunday I was unable to sleep, and I kept taking more alcohol in an effort to do so.

About three o'clock in the morning I remembered that my mother had sent me a pamphlet on Christian Science which she wanted me to read. I found it and read an article in which the statement was made that all must be good. The article went on to point out that in the proportion that we realize the allness of good, of God, we bring good into our experience. The logic of this thought appealed to me.
