One of the questions asked in...

One of the questions asked in our "Communion Hymn," which was written by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, reads (Poems, p. 75): "Felt ye the power of the Word?" I am very happy and grateful to be able to testify that for a period of almost forty years, on every occasion when help was needed and Christian Science was rightly applied, I have felt "the power of the Word."

One time while at work I thought that I was coming down with the grippe. I remembered Mrs. Eddy's admonition in Science and Health (p. 390), "Meet the incipient stages of disease with as powerful mental opposition as a legislator would employ to defeat the passage of an inhuman law." And I did just that. I mentally denied the suggestion that I was becoming sick and declared the truth about myself as taught in Christian Science. All during the day I tried hard to let only true thoughts of God and man enter my consciousness, and before the day was over I was completely healed. I felt "the power of the Word."

A few weeks ago while I was working in the cellar my bare arm touched the furnace pipe while the oil burner was on. The first thought that came to me was, "That's not going to bother me." But I soon found out that there was not any power in that statement, and my arm started to pain me. Then I immediately denied that I had in reality ever been burned, and I realized the reason why I had not. In less than a minute the pain was gone. I was somewhat amazed, because I had never seen a material condition change as fast as my thinking was changed and corrected. This was another occasion when I felt "the power of the Word."
