"LAND OF THE FREE"

The world over, countries have their national anthems. In their own words, in their own manner of approach, people everywhere sing praise to their fatherland. Patriotism, when not distorted by material sense, is good. Therefore it is right that citizens everywhere should love their country.

In the light of Christian Science, however, it is seen that mass mesmerism must not be confounded with devotion to one's land. Let loose by self-will and mad ambition, mass mesmerism doggedly attends egotism and self-love. Mesmerism sends forth the poison of envy, criticism, hate, and suspicion, shutting out the good ever emanating from the divine Mind, God.

A true patriotic sense includes that type of unselfed love which not only recognizes the good in every land, but is grateful for every expression of good wherever found. Thereby patriotism opens wide the portals of opportunity and lets in what God, divine Love, has in store for all men alike, namely liberty and plenty. A genuine patriotic sense is synonymous with large-heartedness, chivalry, generosity, and humanitarianism. A true patriot is a cosmopolite or, as Kipling poetically describes him, a "little friend of all the world."
