I heard of Christian Science through a friend who had been healed by it after doctors had pronounced her case to be incurable. At the first service which I attended at a Church of Christ, Scientist, I understood very little of what was read, but I felt a sustaining power which made me very happy. It was like a cup of cold water offered to one parched with thirst.

Not long afterward I had an experience which enabled me to catch a glimpse of the applicability and efficacy of this power. I was swimming with a friend in a lake during a thunderstorm, and I swam much too far out. The raging of the elements grew worse, the waves became more powerful, and I felt that I was not making any headway at all. Fear assailed me, a violent palpitation of the heart set in, and I began swallowing water. I was near to drowning. Then I closed my eyes and repeated aloud these words from a hymn (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 148): "God is round about me." Fear vanished at once, and I could swim more easily than ever before. As I reached the shore a bank of black clouds parted, and a stream of golden light poured through.

Before I saw clearly the efficacy of Spirit in my experience, much materiality, self-will, and ignorance had to be overcome, and I had to learn many lessons. When I gave up taking pellets, severe headaches disappeared. With the aid of a practitioner I was healed instantaneously of a case of grippe and also of an attack of sciatica. At the age of five our son was healed of distressing inflammation of the gall bladder.
