A PRACTICAL RULE OF LIVING

In her writings Mary Baker Eddy gives much helpful instruction for those who wish to progress in daily living. In the Manual of The Mother Church our Leader offers us a practical rule of conduct under the heading "God's Requirement." She writes (Art. XXIV, Sect. 5), "God requires wisdom, economy, and brotherly love to characterize all the proceedings of the members of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist." It is evident from this statement that the three qualities of wisdom, economy, and brotherly love must characterize thought and action in the daily life of the Christian Scientist.

The writer of Proverbs has much to say regarding wisdom. He tells us that its value is greater than gold, silver, and precious stones—greater in fact than all earthly possessions. He refers to wisdom as a tree of life which preserves men from evil. How can this wisdom be attained? Not merely through books and observation, but through the recognition and demonstration of man's spiritual selfhood.

Christian Science reveals that wisdom is an inherent quality of man, and one of its chief accompaniments is spiritual understanding. All the earthly wisdom of the magicians and learned men could not interpret the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar. But the pure-minded Daniel, who constantly turned to divine Mind for guidance, explained its meaning. And in later years Jesus, who in his boyhood confounded the rabbis in the temple with his words, said of a certain situation (Matt. 11:25), "I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes."
